Since Pick Pico had to be cancelled due to COVID-19, we have been working hard to create a way for our community to support local businesses during this crisis. We have created a website called CLICK PICO. This is a website that features deals and specials from our local businesses. More will be added each week.
We all love this community and we all moved here because of the schools, the proximity to transportation and the fact that we could walk to so many things....restaurants, shops and theaters....which are now in serious jeopardy.
Go to the site...use it....once... twice a week. Leave comments in the Flash News Bar at the top. Let our business community know we are here for them. Tell them when you order you found them on CLICK PICO.
I have sent an email to all local HOAs and CD5 and we will distribute on the WNC site as well. Posting now on Next Door
Copy and paste the message below and please send to everyone you can think of.
I am counting on the OAC to jump in and CLICK PICO often.
If you have any questions or thoughts on how to spread the word... please email me.
If you have a business you love that is not on the site..tell them to email me at info@clickpico.com. This is totally free and they can change their special any time.
Soon I will have a flyer that will need to be distributed throughout the neighborhood. Looking for any kids who need community service hours. Walk a block, social distance while doing so, get some fresh air and exercise while helping our community. Should have something by tomorrow. Let me know if you have a kid who is itching for a job.
Thanks Everyone and Stay Safe
Lisa
Hi All
So today our Council office called with an urgent request. The new homeless shelters that are being set up at WW Rec and Cheviot Hills are in desperate need for towels.
They are offering people there showers, but they have no towels. OAC will be gathering towels from our members and will deliver to these Rec centers and other places of need in our area.
Towels can be used, but they must be clean and not ripped. If you have any towels you can spare, please drop them in my front yard tomorrow between 9am-3pm.
I will put out some red tubs for you to put them in.
Thank you in advance for helping with this effort.
Please take care
Lisa
Hi All
Just wanted to share the story they did on CBS 2 / KCAL 9 about the towel drive for our temporary homeless shelters that are being set up at Westwood Rec and Cheviot Hills.
Thank you to all who contributed to this effort. We donated 825 towels.
In this crazy time..it is very comforting to know we are there for each other.
Take Care
Lisa
OAC donated books, puzzles and small art projects to the Westwood Rec Center for those who are sheltered there during the COVID 19 crisis.
Overland Avenue Community purchased the items from Arteria, an art shop on Pico Blvd.
Many at the Westwood Rec Center have no where to go or have nothing to do but sit on their cot. The staff at the center were thrilled with the OAC donation as these small projects will keep up the moral and make people less anxious and scared.
OAC is proud to contribute these items and support a local business at the same time
Go OAC!
I know it has been a very long time since we talked about this project. For those unfamiliar, it was a 1.8M grant that the WNC won to improve Pico Boulevard...new sidewalks, trees, crosswalks, ramps, lighting at bus stops and a median at Pico and Overland, north side.
The City certainly moves at it's own pace, but we are making progress...slowly...and I wanted to give you an update.
The design process is 90% complete. The approvals are almost done. We can expect to see first improvements popping up by early next year.
The first project slated for completion is the median at Overland. This will be located in the existing painted triangle between lanes to go south and the lane to turn left.
There will be plantings in this median and a bump out at the gas station to calm traffic as it flows northbound and to announce to drivers that they are entering a residential neighborhood. As we get closer I will keep you informed about any breaking ground ceremony.
As part of the grant there will also be a new pedestrian signal at Westwood and Tennessee to bikes and pedestrians can cross safely. There will also be a prohibition to cross over or go southbound from westbound Tennessee.
As you all know, there has been a huge uptick in crime and homeless issues in our area. As a WNC business seat, I am trying to put together strategies to help businesses combat harassment, theft and other homeless issues. These issues are bleeding into our residential community as well. Police can only be stretched so far and hiring a private patrol is expensive. One of the ways to do this is to have the community volunteer with LAPD. You will receive training and then be placed in a LAPD car with a radio to provide the eyes and ears for LAPD. You do not confront, only report, but studies have shown even just having an LAPD cruiser driving around the area deters crime. This also offers the police time to request assistance from homeless services who can better address some situations. If interested here is the link for more information.
We have a very talented musician in our community. Tom has just completed another album. Check it out....
I don't know if you saw the news yet, but my new EP has been released! Here it is:

I hope these seven solo piano arrangements of traditional hymns, written during the covid-19 pandemic, can bring some peace and calm to you in these anxious times. Tom
